Funeral cover for parents in South Africa

The rules, the waiting period and who gets paid

Short answerChecked 28 October 2026
You can take funeral cover for your parents in South Africa either by adding them as extended family on your own funeral policy or with a separate policy. Every funeral policy must follow rule 2A of the Policyholder Protection Rules: a waiting period of at most 6 months for natural death, none for accidental death, no new waiting period if your parent switches from a policy whose waiting period was completed, and payment decided within 2 business days of the last document. The cover is capped at R100,000 per life insured, escalated with CPI.

The cap comes from the Prudential Authority's standard GOI 7, quoted by the FSCA and the Prudential Authority in Joint Communication 7 of 2024; rule 2A.4.2 of the Policyholder Protection Rules forbids benefits above it. Because the cap is per life insured, insuring the same parent on several funeral policies does not raise their funeral cover.

Age limits for parents, the cover amount per category of family member and the premium are set by each insurer: ask for them in writing. More on how funeral policies work: funeral cover in South Africa.

The waiting period on a parent's cover

  • Natural death: a waiting period of at most 6 months, or a quarter of the policy term if shorter (rule 2A.6.1).
  • Accidental death: no waiting period (rule 2A.6.2).
  • Your parent already had funeral cover: if they had a policy with another insurer at least 31 days before the new one, covering similar risks, and finished its waiting period, the new insurer may impose none (rule 2A.6.5). If the old waiting period was not finished, only the part still to run (rule 2A.6.6).
  • Pre-existing illness: it may be excluded only through that waiting period, never by a permanent exclusion (rule 2A.7.1).

The insurer must ask, before selling the policy, whether the person had a previous funeral policy and completed its waiting period (rule 2A.6.7). Give the details of your parent's old policy — it can save months without cover. Source: rule 2A of the Long-term Policyholder Protection Rules.

Paying a parent's policy from a SASSA grant

Under Regulation 29 of the Social Assistance Act regulations, SASSA may allow one deduction a month, of at most 10% of the grant, for a funeral policy from a registered insurer — and only with the beneficiary's consent (SAnews, 14 August 2025). An older person's grant can therefore pay for a funeral policy if your parent agrees.

A deduction your parent never agreed to can be disputed by SMS to 34548 with their ID number and the company's name; then report it at a SASSA office and cancel the policy with the insurer (SAnews).

When your parent dies: the claim

  1. Tell the insurer as soon as possible; the claim must be recorded by the next business day, even if documents are missing (rule 17.8.7).
  2. Submit what the insurer asks for — usually your parent's death certificate, both IDs and its own claim form.
  3. Within 2 business days of receiving all required documents, the insurer must authorise payment, reject the claim or say it disputes it; a disputed claim gets 14 more business days (rules 2A.8.1 and 2A.8.2).
  4. The money is paid to the claimant: the policy may not say a cash benefit goes straight to a funeral parlour, but you may choose that at claim stage (rules 2A.10.1 and 2A.10.2).

If your parent died in a road accident, the Road Accident Fund also pays the necessary funeral costs: see RAF death claims. A rejected claim goes to the free National Financial Ombud: see complaints.

Before you sign

  • The insurer's name on the policy — check it on the Prudential Authority's list.
  • The seller's FSP number — check it on the FSCA register. The regulators have warned about unlicensed entities, including funeral parlours, that collect premiums and carry the risk themselves (Joint Communication 7 of 2024).
  • The cover amount and age limit for a parent, in writing.
  • Who receives the payout for your parent, and whether you can change it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take out funeral cover for my parents?

Yes: add them to your funeral policy as extended family, or take a separate policy for them. Each parent is a separate life insured, capped at R100,000 escalated with CPI, with the waiting-period limits of PPR rule 2A.

Is there a waiting period on funeral cover for parents?

For natural death, at most 6 months (or a quarter of the term if shorter). For accidental death, none. If your parent switches from another insurer after completing that policy's waiting period, the new insurer may impose none (rules 2A.6.1, 2A.6.2, 2A.6.5).

Can a funeral policy exclude my parent's illness?

Only through the waiting period. A funeral policy may not exclude a pre-existing health condition in any other way (rule 2A.7.1).

Can my parent's funeral policy be paid from their SASSA grant?

Yes, with their consent: one deduction a month of at most 10% of the grant, for a funeral policy from a registered insurer (Regulation 29).

How fast does a funeral claim pay after a parent dies?

The insurer must decide within 2 business days of receiving all required documents, and pay or reject a disputed claim within 14 further business days (rules 2A.8.1 and 2A.8.2).
