The Prudential Authority's register, retrieved on 28 October 2026, lists 162 insurers: 59 life insurers, 58 non-life insurers, 19 microinsurers, 10 cell captive insurers, 6 captive insurers, 9 reinsurers and branches of foreign reinsurers, and Lloyd's. Only a licensed insurer may carry insurance business in South Africa (Insurance Act 18 of 2017, section 5).

How to check an insurer, broker or adviser

  1. Find the insurer named on your policy schedule in the list below or on the Prudential Authority's insurers list. Many brands sell through another company's licence: the schedule names the real insurer.
  2. Check the broker, adviser or funeral parlour that sells you the policy on the FSCA's register of authorised financial services providers.
  3. In doubt, call the FSCA contact centre on 0800 20 37 22 before you pay (FSCA).

Life, non-life, micro, cell captive: what the classes mean

  • Life insurers sell life, funeral, disability, health-event and credit life cover, and investment policies.
  • Non-life insurers sell car, home, business, travel, liability and other short-term cover. The list includes the Road Accident Fund and Sasria.
  • Microinsurers may only sell simple, low-value policies, such as funeral cover.
  • Cell captive insurers rent a 'cell' to a brand, a retailer or an underwriting manager, who sells policies under its own name: the cell captive is the insurer on the policy.
  • Captives insure their own group; reinsurers insure insurers. Neither sells to the public.

The Prudential Authority's Annual Report 2025/26 counted 158 licensed insurance entities at 31 December 2025, and also supervises Lloyd's and the Road Accident Fund.
