KeyHealth: an open scheme, also for local government

KeyHealth is on the CMS register as open (CMS Annual Report 2025/26). Its 2026 member guide says membership "is available to private individuals and employer groups, including local government employees", and that it is one of four schemes accredited to operate in local government (Member Guide 2026).

Its annual report 2025 names PPS Healthcare Administrators as administrator and counts 34,154 principal members and 71,987 beneficiaries at 31 December 2024, Equilibrium being the largest option (annual report). The CMS lists KeyHealth among the four schemes it inspected routinely in 2025/26 and reported positive feedback from them (CMS Annual Report 2025/26).

KeyHealth premiums 2026

The KeyHealth hospital network

The scheme's option pages describe a designated service provider (DSP) hospital network: Life Healthcare and Netcare hospitals nationally, plus selected Mediclinic hospitals (Western Cape, Bloemfontein, Polokwane) and other selected hospitals; voluntary use of another hospital means a 30% co-payment. On Platinum, any Netcare or Life Healthcare hospital (Essence 2026). PMB conditions are paid in full at the DSPs: Prescribed Minimum Benefits.

KeyHealth in 2027

KeyHealth has published its "Premiums for 2027": per main member, Essence R2,616, Origin R2,842, Equilibrium R3,575, Silver R6,352, Gold R9,409 and Platinum R15,211 (2027 premiums). It states no average percentage.

Joining and claiming

Apply online through the private member application on keyhealthmedical.co.za (a sales consultant then calls to complete it), through your local government employer or a broker; option changes take effect on 1 January. The scheme applies the waiting periods of section 29A (3 months general, 12 months condition-specific) and late-joiner penalties after 35: see medical aid in South Africa.

Providers usually claim electronically. If you paid, mark the account "Refund Member" and post it with the receipt to KeyHealth, PO Box 14145, Lyttelton 0140, or use the online form; only claims received within 4 months of treatment are processed (claims). Client service centre 0860 671 050.

Complaints

  1. Complain to KeyHealth first, in writing, and keep the reference number: e-mail [email protected]; the Principal Officer replies in writing within 30 days, and the Disputes Committee hears unresolved benefit or contribution disputes (complaints process).
  2. If the answer does not settle it, use the scheme's internal dispute process (the scheme's rules require one, s 29(1)(j) of the Medical Schemes Act).
  3. Then complain to the Council for Medical Schemes: e-mail [email protected] with the CMS complaint form, the scheme's reply and your accounts (CMS complaints procedure). Under section 47 the scheme has 30 days to answer the CMS; a ruling can be appealed within 3 months (s 48). How it works: Council for Medical Schemes.
